Who Is Mark Mitchell?

Judge Mark Mitchell has lived and worked in Thomas County since graduating from the Mercer University Law School in 1991.

A native of Norcross, Georgia, Judge Mitchell graduated summa cum laude from Mercer University Atlanta with a degree in History and Political Science in 1988.  In 1991 he earned his law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University.

Judge Mitchell began his legal career in Thomas County as an Assistant District Attorney for the Southern Judicial Circuit, a post which he held from 1991 until 1999 when he left to enter private law practice.

Over the course of his career, Judge Mitchell has handled a variety of legal matters.  As an Assistant District Attorney, criminal defense lawyer and Judge, Judge Mitchell has handled almost every kind of criminal case from public drunk to capital murder.  As an attorney in private practice and as a judge,  Judge Mitchell has handled a variety of civil matters including litigation over breach of contract, probate, injunctive relief, products liability, personal injury and family law.

Judge Mitchell is married to Thomasville attorney Shelba D. Sellers.  As the State Court position in Thomas County is part time,  Judge Mitchell still maintains a private law practice.  Mark and Shelba practice law together at the law firm of Sellers and Mitchell where they specialize in the practice of Bankruptcy Law.  Mark and Shelba are members of Saint Augustine Catholic Church in Thomasville.

From 2001 - 2005 Judge Mitchell held the post of Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Thomas University.  In addition to teaching classes in Criminal Justice, Judge Mitchell also taught Business Law.

In late 2004 Judge Mitchell was appointed Judge of the Thomasville Municipal Court and took office as an Associate Judge of the Thomas County Magistrate Court in 2005.

In 2012 the people of Thomas County elected Judge Mitchell to serve as State Court Judge.
